2 kinds of people

There are 2 kinds of people in our family, those that eat raw oysters and those that don’t. I am firmly on the side of the oyster eaters with Casey’s parents and Casey and his sister are on the other side of the divide. This small matter did not deter us from ordering 16 doz oysters over Christmas though hehheheehhe I do have to say that Casey’s taste is improving and he will eat them cooked, but he is still a wuss :P No, I don’t reeaalllyyy think that.

I am interested in the first taste of oysters, when it occured and if there was any family bias one way or the other. For me,my first taste is still vividly imprinted in my head; it was when I was 5 years old. My second cousin was visiting from New Zealand and we were walking along the rocks. She started to do a happy dance as she had spied some oysters growing on the rocks. She then told me how good they are and how to get them off, with a rock by bashing them LOL. The aim is to hit them hard enough to crush the outside, but not so hard as to implant the shell into the oyster or to mash it too bits. I loved oysters and the very fun method of extracting them from the very first time, but my methods of aquiring them have changed signifigantly. Instead I now save myself for down here, we drive just up the road to the local oyster shop and buy shucked oysters to our heart no stomachs content. There is a reason why I save myself, because after having tried the oysters in Sydney, these are soooo much better. I don’t mean that they aren’t avaliable there, they are, at Rockpool and other fine dining establishments. This is because Tathra Oysters from Baronda Lagoon at Nelson’s are some of Australia’s finest oysters, they regularily win awards too. Plus they are fresher and cheaper here too. We bought the middle grade and they are $10 a doz at Christmas, they are generally a dollar or so cheaper at other times of the year.

I guess this is the long way of saying this, but if you are down the farsouth coast, go to Tathra, go to Reservoir St and by Oysters, simple as long as you are one of US, that is :)

I have never tried an oyster from your part of the world - they certainly look thick-shelled and healthy. I like your photography - what kind of camera do you use?

It’s a digital SLR, fuji finepix s602z. Quite an old model now, got it years ago it’s only really a 3 megapixel but it’s got a great macro and a quality lense, and for blogging 3 megapixel is more than enough :)
